Over the weekend just passed (12/13 Feb) we learnt of a person who fraudulently claimed $28,000 from Work and Income and travelled the world seeing all the great tourist spots that all New Zealanders would love to visit, but many never will because they will never be able to afford it. He did it for two years and openly talks about it. He is dining out on it. Think about it. In that time this selfish person had his hand in every tax paying New Zealanders pocket, as he drew the unemployment benefit. He didn't care about anyone else other than himself.
Benefit fraud is a crime. This individual stole from all New Zealand tax payers. We have to stop seeing this behaviour as not being a crime or a "victimless crime". Government isn't no one. It is all New Zealanders. The Government spends money collected from us. Claiming fraudulently from MSD or ACC costs us all millions of dollars every year. Are you going to sit on your hands and accept this behaviour from a supposedly fellow citizen?
I ask New Zealanders if you know individuals who are ripping the tax payer off by claiming benefits they are not entitled to then provide that information directly to the Government Departments or if for some reason you are uncomfortable doing this then provide the information anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or on the encrypted online message form which can be found on the website http://www.crimestoppers-nz.org/
